Artist's Statement

Humans are endlessly adaptable creatures: We see traces of their changes everywhere. As an artist, my imagination has underscored the human form in the landscape, alone and with other animals, sometimes fully realized and other times highly abstracted and obscure. I create their portraits, peer into their habitats, reflect on their adaptive nature.

As my work has evolved over the past few years, I’ve sought more and more to move the lens in closer and then further out, to see specific personality types, to get to know the people that inhabit my imagination. Then I draw the lens back to view the chaotic metropolises in which they life. These cities are hybrids of real and imagined places, from many periods of time, pulsing with life and caught in cycles of constant improvement and construction. By moving my focus to these two extremes, the personal and the civic, I hope to know something about the experience of what it means to be alive amidst today’s distracted complexity.
